ALBUM LINER NOTES

As a young singer who had just come out of an unusual stint in the pop music industry, I deeply craved subtly, story-telling, and comfort in music. I stumbled upon Blossom Dearie’s music and kept coming back. She was unique. I was drawn to how she channeled some of the most important tools that a sensitive singer needs to cultivate. I began to notice “feel”, tempo, phrasing and how artfully the instrumentation can be a cradle for those things. Her delivery was sincere, skilled, and downright badass at times - an extension of who she was. The first time I worked with Joe, I saw that in him. He allows his artistry to come through with ease, grace and the perfect amount of humor. I mentioned the idea of what would become “The Blossom Dearie Project” at that very first gig. A few months later, we began this wonderful journey. - Sharon Sable

When Sharon first approached me to accompany her for a Blossom Dearie recording project, I knew enough about Blossom (the singer) to know how perfect this would be for Sharon, and responded enthusiastically. What I didn't realize at the time (similar to the ignorance that many still have about Nat King Cole) was the importance of Blossom's contributions as a pianist. It quickly became clear to me that, to do this right, I would be in the same position as Sharon (but as a pianist rather than a vocalist); to represent this wonderful artist in my own "voice". Accompaniment, to me, is always a collaboration, but this project uniquely so. The task we took on was no less than for the 2 of us to represent Blossom's singular presence; to perform as one. I couldn't be more pleased and proud of the result. And grateful to Sharon for seeing and believing in the potential of our collaboration. It is a continuing blessing. - Joe Holt
