vol 3 no 12
Merry Chistmas!
I hope this special time of year finds you well. Thank you for all the support and encouragement you have shown me this year.  Now, believe me, I understand hectic schedules about now, but I'm hopeful you'll consider sharing the season with me in some way. Let's explore the possibilities....
Featured Performances
FRIDAY - SUNDAY 12/14-16: "Do You Hear What I Hear - A Holiday Celebration" at the Prince Theatre, Chestertown, Md.
My Christmas CD becomes the theme, as I'll be joined by a roster of the area's finest vocalists performing the music from "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "Do You See What I See" . I'll perform solo and accompany.
SUNDAY 1/13: 5pm
Joe performs with
Dan Tobias , and Scott Silbert  for a jazz vespers service at the Newark (De) First Church of the Nazarene
This initiates the jazz vespers series for First Church, as the first of four: 1/month through April. Joe will play a "supporting role" in each of the services, featuring outstanding and popular traditional and mainstream jazz artists in the greater Phila./Balt. region. Danny is a "first call" trumpeter for many jazz bands in central/north Jersey and NYC area. Scott is head arranger for the US Navy Band in the DC area. This will be their first performance together, with Joe on piano. Not to be missed.
FRIDAY thru SUNDAY: 2/1-3

Joe performs with the Midiri Brothers sextet and trio, and solo piano at the Central Illinois Jazz Festival

A return trip for the band to this longstanding midwest event. After a rousing debut last year, the band returns - this year with an additional performance for the trio, and Joe scheduled in the "pianorama".
9/2 thru 9/16:
Joe performs with the Midiri Brothers quintet on the Crystal Symphony for Jazzdagen Tours
14-day cruise from London to New York. This voyage of the Vikings stops at many interesting ports, such as: Invergordon (Scotland), Reykjavik (Iceland), Nuuk (Greenland) and more. The band performs each night, in addition to special events.
Other Opportunities
In December, it is often the case that fewer events in the (busy) schedule are public, and so it is this year (beyond our featured event at the Prince Theatre on 12/14,15,16). The flip side of this is, believe it or not, a wealth of public events/concerts in early January (go figure, but it happens most every year). Check in with the schedule for full details.
The big news here, of course, is the release of "Do You See What I See". Other happenings:
-The continued expansion of my YouTube channel. Over 60 posts, and 13,000 views (in 6 months)! New posts continue to be added weekly.
-Several recording projects in progress - details coming soon.
-Joe Holt's Notes on the Radio now plays to a record audience, and growing! Thank you!
-This Month's You Tube Featured Playlist - Intro to Joe
Other News
-This month, I renew my Music Therapy certification MT-BC for another 5 years, having passed my board exam. Thanks to YouTube, the window is cracked (but just a little) into my work with seniors.
-With the welcome edition of Kim Mills to the staff of Joe Holt's Notes, exciting new initiatives and opportunities to connect and be involved are being put into place. Check out the "Getting Involved" Column of each newsletter for new ideas - and get in touch with us with any ideas of your own.
Getting Involved
If you would be interested in getting me to your town (wherever that may be) to perform, and/or you want to impress your friends, and/or you live to create more work for yourself, consider hosting a house concert (if you have a piano, and room to accommodate a small audience). To find out more, or to share other ideas, contact Kim Mills (Manager, Joe Holt's Notes Records) at
From the Journal
The following 2 entries were posted during the Sun Valley (Idaho) festival in October:
"Really late on Friday evening. Today was stimulating on multiple levels. Just spent the last hour (or two?) in deep (but wholly navigable) discussion with Gary (it's apparently how we wind down to sleep when we room together). Cool. So was the playing today. 2 excellent sets, all things considered. Yes, only 2 for the band. Everyone else in the band had been given additional opportunities today in alternative settings (big band, mixed band combos, etc). Once I'm in this realm longer (and those who construct these things become more aware), I'll get these opportunities as well. Even so, I would desire the band be put to more use (as it often is - today being somewhat of an anomaly). I'm enjoying the rapport, both on and off stage. I'm growing in my understanding that there are more global things to appreciate about this band - visible more clearly when stepping back and adjusting/changing the lens. As I've said before; I've arrived back on the scene at an exciting time. Now, I need to quell my enthusiasm, and get some sleep (I never told you how late it really is, and we'll leave it that way)."
"Late now on Saturday night. Today the playing was a little less "on" overall, but we still went over very well. Tried more videotaping today, but as all the venues (I tried recording in) had picture window backdrops (of some fashion), so it's all washed out. I still, though, will post 2 toons from the Sun Valley pianorama later this week. I'm very happy with the playing. Got to sit in (actually fill in) briefly on another set this morning - continuing to move toward becoming a known presence on this scene. This festival really takes care of the musicians - the food is too good (no, wait a minute, I didn't really mean that)! I'll be afraid to get on the scale when I get home. I'm also getting spoiled by regular doses of Starbucks coffee (also provided to the musicians, along with lots of booze and liquor, which I pass on). Life is tough sometimes."
The Big Story
"Christmas Shopping Solutions"
Christmastime is here, and with it, a new (second) Christmas CD. "Do You See What I See" (see below) has arrived just in time for the production "Do You Hear What I Hear - A Holiday Celebration", featuring the music of both my Christmas CDs, held at the Prince Theatre, in Chestertown, Md. And if that isn't enough for you holiday gift giving, check out the new expanded line of merchandise! We've added many cool new items and art, including both Christmas CD covers, and a cool new poster image (kudos to Ned Bustard of World's End Images). I know where I'll be doing much of my shopping!
